Friday, September 4th, 2009

A college would be incomplete without a good library. Library forms an integral part of any college as it helps students with its vast collection of books. Any student joining a college should make it a habit to visit the library regularly. There are many students who don’t attend the library even once. Even if they do then it’s only for fun or just because his or her friends are attending it.

A good library consists of subjects other than those taught in the college. There are not only books, but also newspapers and magazines. There is a common myth that libraries are only for those who are studious, but it is not so. It’s for all those who want to dive in the ocean of knowledge. Some students find it very difficult to do their studies at their homes due to various reasons. For such students library is no less than a boon. They can study or prepare notes which otherwise might not be possible at their home. Most of the libraries give the borrowing facility, so students can take the books home and study or prepare notes as per their convenience. Borrowing books is not only convenient but also helps students save cost on expensive books.

Most of colleges assign their students with various projects. It is at this point of time that library comes handy. Students don’t have to run here and there for reference. They can get all the material and other facts in the library itself. Students can form groups as per the instruction of their teacher and spend time in the library to complete their projects.

Not only student’s even teachers can be regular visitors to the library. During the free lecture or free time they can visit and derive maximum benefit from the library.

Today when most of the students are glued to T.V channels, there is a need to inculcate reading habits in students. Such habits can be formed only when students are encouraged to join libraries. There should be compulsory few sessions in college for students to visit the library. An introductory lecture should also be given by the librarian by visiting the classes. It will help students to get fist hand information as to what is in store for them in the library. It will also generate interest and curiosity in the books.

Reading not only helps in avoiding bad habits like watching television or playing games on the computer for long hours but also imbibes discipline.
