Drugs Addiction Tarnishes Young Generation
Be it a modern society or the traditional one, drugs will always deteriorate the standards, norms and values and culture of every society. Children are regarded as the hope of tomorrow, however when drugs directly attack the hope, the whole society is at stake.
The percentage of children involved in drugs intake is rising day by day. According to the survey made by the National Centre on Addiction and substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, the percentage of middle school students infected by drugs have raised to 28% while those of high school students have raised to 62%.
Causes of Drug addiction
Drugs addiction can be caused due to en number of things loneliness, unhappiness, depression, divorced parents, mounting route towards crime, major illness or sometimes death in the family. However the prime causes are genetic make-up, peer pressure and personality. Disease like diabetics have hereditary background, drugs too have hereditary background. If any of the parent has a history of drug addiction, chances of child involving in drug addiction increases. Peer pressure and personality go hand in hand. It is said that ‘bad company corrupts good character’ similarly peer pressure forces the person into drug addiction however I feel a person with a strong personality can resist to the evil peer pressure.
Drugs affect performance in school
Drugs addiction has a direct effect on human brain; it affects some most important parts of human brain, the Cerebrum that controls the thinking process like conceptual analysis and organized thought; Hippocampus that controls the learning and memory and Neurons that transmit, receive and process information to the brain. This has a direct effect on person’s academic performance and behavioral performance too. A person cannot outperform in their academics and assignments. Due to the effect Hippocampus he cannot retain the information on assignments and academics, he is also not able to understand and concentrate on the academics which have an evil effect on his grade. Due to the effect on Neurons a person remains absent-minded in the class. He normally bunks his classes and tries to stay alone, he becomes more open to violence and aggression, his peers may change from the studious classmates to deviant school kids and he always indulges in disciplinary problems. All these circumstances subsequently lead towards him in dropping out from the school.
Best measure – Quit Drugs
Education enables the overall development of the child; schools make the child capable to handle his success and failures, however if the child indulges in drug addiction he is growth process is shunned. Therefore in order to withstand in the competitive modern environment, children should not be involved drug addiction practices, however if children are already involved in such practices; it’s the responsibility of parents and schools to drag the students out of such practices. There are various rehabilitation centers providing measures to eradicate the urge for drugs. However love and affection from friends, family and teachers also help the students to step out of such world. Some other measures that help them eradicate their urge for drugs include involving students in different activities, praying, building confidence in the student, inspiring him etc.
